Green Roof System: a new option for reducing heat in container houses
The biggest problem with "container houses" in Thailand is unavoidably the heat, especially as outdoor temperatures keep rising. When sunlight hits the steel roof directly, heat builds up and transfers into the interior quickly, making rooms hot and stuffy and forcing the air conditioning to work harder.
Many people therefore try to solve the problem by turning the air conditioning colder, but in reality this may only treat the symptom, because the more heat gets into the building, the harder the air conditioner has to work, resulting in higher electricity bills and more energy use.
So wouldn't it be better to switch from "fighting the heat" to blocking the heat at its source?
One interesting idea is the Green Roof System, or roof garden, which makes use of the roof area by adding layers of material and plants to help reduce the direct heat gain from sunlight.
Why does a roof garden help reduce heat?
The principle is simple: the plants and layers of material on the roof act as a natural heat shield.
During the day when the sun is strong, the roof of a container house is the part that takes the heat directly. But with a layer of plants, soil or growing medium helping out, the heat passing into the roof is reduced. In addition, evaporation of water from the plants draws heat away from the surrounding area, making the environment around the roof cooler than a steel roof exposed directly to the sun.
This idea doesn't just ask "how do we make the air conditioning colder?" but changes the question to "how do we let less heat into the building in the first place?"
Based on the Green Roof System concept, the temperature inside the space can be reduced by around 3–5 degrees Celsius. The actual result depends on the roof type, materials used, thickness of the growing layer, the plants chosen, the climate and the overall system design.
1. Load-bearing structure: the crucial point you must not overlook
Before lifting plants up there, we need to understand that a container roof is not designed to carry large horizontal loads (a container roof carries load best at the corners and posts).
- Reinforce the structure: A secondary steel frame should be installed above the existing container roof to transfer the load to the container's main posts.
- Waterproofing: High-quality waterproofing must be applied and a membrane laid to prevent moisture from the soil from corroding the steel surface and causing rust.
2. Soil layer and growing medium: light but effective
For a garden on a container roof, we focus on an Extensive Green Roof system (thin soil layer, lightweight).
- Drainage layer: Use plastic sheets with drainage dimples so water doesn't pool, rotting roots and adding unnecessary weight.
- Growing medium: Don't use ordinary heavy garden soil! Use a mix of pumice, finely chopped coconut husk and organic fertiliser, which is lightweight, retains moisture well and has excellent aeration.
3. Plants suited to the Thai sun on a container roof
Because a container roof takes strong sun all day and is exposed to strong winds, the plants chosen should be "sun-tolerant, drought-tolerant and low-maintenance".
- Ground cover / moss rose (portulaca): Fast-growing, with beautiful flowers and excellent drought tolerance.
- Snake plant: Tough and hardy, and helps purify the air.
- Bromeliads: Tolerate bright sunlight and don't need frequent watering.
- Cat's whiskers or low shrubs: Help create layers that give the garden more depth.
Summary
Turning a container roof into a green garden doesn't just make the house noticeably "ice-cool"; it also adds a place to relax, creates a small ecosystem, and transforms the hard look of a steel house into a shady, environmentally friendly dream home.
Does a green roof really make a container house cooler?
It can reduce the roof temperature by several degrees, because the soil and plants act as natural insulation and reduce heat build-up from direct sunlight.
Can a container roof bear the weight of a garden?
Yes, if the structure is reinforced and the load distribution system is properly designed by an engineer.
Is a green roof hard to maintain?
An Extensive system uses sun-tolerant plants and needs little care: just check the water system and trim periodically.
Can every type of container house have a green roof?
Most can, but the structure must always be assessed before installation.
