An in-depth look at 'rust' from people who actually live with it: coating techniques for seaside container houses that last about 10 years per coating

Owning a seaside holiday home made from a container house is many people's dream, but this dream often comes with a nightmare called "rust", especially within 0-5 kilometres of the coast, where salt spray (Salt Spray) is at work 24 hours a day.

Left to fate, a container house may start to corrode in just 2-3 years. But if you understand a Proactive "coating strategy", your container house will still be strong even after 10 years, and with recoating on schedule it can last for decades more. Here are the techniques the professionals use.

1. Polyurethane paint system (Polyurethane – PU): armour against sun and salt

Most people are familiar with ordinary oil-based paint, but for a seaside home, "polyurethane paint" is the definitive answer.

  • Why PU?: This paint is highly flexible and resistant to UV rays (and the sun is very strong by the sea). Most importantly, the density of its paint film means salt spray cannot penetrate through to the steel.

Pro Tip: Choosing heavy-industrial or marine-grade PU paint will help prevent fading and white salt stains for more than 10 years.

2. The heart of it is the "anti-rust primer" (Primer)

A beautiful outer paint job only deals with the symptoms. The secret of durability lies in surface preparation and priming.

  • Sandblasting: Before painting, strip the old paint and remove dirt by sandblasting, so the steel surface is "rough" enough for the primer to grip as firmly as possible.

Epoxy Zinc Rich Primer: Choose a primer with a high zinc powder content, because zinc acts as a "sacrificial" layer (Sacrificial Protection): the zinc reacts with oxygen instead of the steel, so rust does not spread into the body of the container office unit.
